New Cover Designs

Short and sweet on this post...

Three cover designs bringing the collection together in a more stylized way.

See them here:

I've also renamed the books as you'd see in the new cover designs.
The trilogy remains "Beneath A Broken Sky", but the three parts are now "Inseptum", "Ad Fundum", and "Peto Verum". The spin-off book remains "Dispersion" and I'm yet to even contemplate it's design work. lol.

Further name changes have also occurred in the books as well.
Charles McAlister (Minister for Science, previous Alex McAlister)
Aleksandr Petrov (professional Quantist, previous Dmitri Tirklov)
William Polanski (TerraSpace's government liason, previous William Platski)
Abby/Abigail Jaeger (specialist operator, previous Renee ???)

Current work on Book 2 is closing quickly. Some notes of interest:
Extra scenes between Joseph and Katie have been written during their "date out" at RiverSide. This was due to an annoyance I had in which it didn't seem like they had enough interaction time together before the rest of everything starts kaploding around them.

More details have also been added to showcase Abby's unrelenting mission and boosting her credibility as someone who's freaking scary and not wanting to be crossed.

And... interaction time between the Landow and Joseph has also been adjusted, so that their relationship points seem a little more harder hitting when things happen and overall more believable.

Plus lots of little plot strings neatly getting tied up and paid off, grammar, spelling, phrasing, paragraphing... ugh. I'm loving it though at the moment, really in the mood for writing lately so it's been good.

Anyhoo... I'm off. Cya.

Ad Fundum Trailer Hits!!!!

Hello to all!
This post is as simple as it can be...

THE "THEATRICAL" TRAILER FOR AD FUNDUM HAS HIT THE INTERWEB TUBES!!!

Ok, I'm exagerating a little there, but the truth is still evident. I've made a trailer, a "fan-made" type trailer. Incorporating numerous shots from existing movies, I've pieced together a little 2 minute trailer-type entity which is surprisingly close to how Book 2 pans out. It doesn't give too many money shots away, nor the twists and turns along the way, but it does provide a decent chunk of apprehensive anxiety that I feel for it.

Since I've started, I've been imagining all these scenes for the book, yet despite them being all on the page, I still want to physically "see" them. Hence, the trailer is born.

In it, you'll see Joseph, Katie, Landow, Ryan, the assassin, the anomaly, and a whole other bunch of all-hell-breaking-lose.

So check it out via the YouTube link below:

Sensational Snippet 2

Here's a bit of the book for your reading interest...

River City University was the city’s primary tertiary institution. It accommodated thousands of courses, a multitude of industries, and a cavalcade of successful students. Ranked in the top five educational establishments in Earth colony, it had also won numerous awards in various disciplines, making it one of the most desired universities on the planet. At last semester’s enrolment tally, there were approximately four hundred and fifty thousand students studying here; three times that number studied externally via Network correspondence from countries around the world. There were even external students studying from the Lunar and Martian colonies. In total, there were over one million students currently enrolled here...

And I was one of them.

Located about forty-five minutes south of the city’s central business district, the two hundred and seventy-five hectare campus was so vast it boasted its own district code and incorporated at least three different suburbs. RCU was such an immense, overwhelming, and – at times – intimidating environment to be in. There were many occasions where I would just stop and look around at where I was, truly honoured to be here at all. Even now, at the end of my educational career, I still felt that way. I thoroughly enjoyed being at university; it felt like a second home sometimes, a place to escape life and just be in a completely different world. The thing that fascinated me the most was how little I knew of the actual university itself. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of offices and lecture halls and tutorial rooms which I’d never ventured into – and probably never would unless there was some major conflict with room bookings. So many areas were common ground for a variety of students but would go completely unvisited by many others, I realised.

As I wandered through the university’s Central Park, I couldn’t help but admire the buildings. The architectural designs were another aspect of the university I’d fallen in love with over the years. While other campus’s consisted of fairly unique forms based on specific eras of history, RCU’s buildings were a mishmash of periods and styles, each with their own grandeur flair of elegance and panache. Buildings would range from the typical classical motif of large granite-sandstone walls and marble flooring, to the more modern industrial designs with exposed structures, crisp white surfaces, and minimalist space-saving layouts. Some buildings boasted colourful artistic sensibilities with extravagant, gravity-defying engineering and cubed glass conservatories that jutted out at awkwardly weird angles from the walls.

Each building, it seemed, mimicked the style of students within. The more creative courses boasted artistically inspired designs while straight-forward no-frills type programs such as mathematics, information technology, and engineering were stylish yet simplistic; science and medicine had the cleanest buildings, with stark minimalistic colours and straight lines; education, literature and history sometimes had more of the classical motifs. Spotted amongst the numerous faculty-themed structures were several sizeable lecture theatres where presentations and large classes could take place. These plain rendered-brick buildings were much more generic in comparison to surrounding architecture, their only purpose to facilitate vast auditorium-styled seating and generous multimedia displays.

I came towards the science faculty’s building; a large seven-storey steel-grey box-like structure with a lot of straight lines and dark tinted windows. Immense solar panels squatted heavily on the roof, their glistening super-black cell arrays angled by automated servos to face the sun.

I glanced down at my watch and realised I was late.

Shit.

I hurriedly entered into the building’s ground floor through a series of sliding doors which quietly glided open as I approached. Bland fluorescently-lit corridors branched off in a number of directions, walls occasionally highlighted by noticeboards, posters, or water fountains. I followed a corridor off to my left towards a small classroom half way along. Reaching the doorway, I pushed it open to see the expectant faces of a few of my classmates. As soon as I entered, they realised who I was and went back to whatever they were doing. They must’ve been anticipating the tutor who still hadn’t arrived; everyone was getting restless, already wanting to leave.

I wasn’t late after all, I thought luckily.

The class was made up of just fifteen students, all of which were looking as excited as could be on the last day of term. There was a soft murmur of discussion across the room as everyone described their holiday plans to each other. I overhead some saying they were heading overseas or interstate, while others were just going to hang around campus or visit family.

I scanned the room for an empty chair. Towards the back, I noticed Ryan’s familiar face and dirty blonde hair. He gave me a quick wave and I made my way through the maze of desks to the vacant seat beside him.

‘Hey mate,’ he greeted as I sat down.
‘Heya,’ I replied, throwing my satchel bag under the desk.

Ryan Larson was my age, a little taller, and had the somewhat typical surfy look to his ruggedly masculine features. At first glance, Ryan’s wavy blonde hair, golden suntan, and piercing blue eyes tended to make him look like an Arts student prankster sitting in a physics class as part of a dare. He certainly didn’t appear like the kind of guy who would be a genius at science. Renowned for his fast and energetic love-life, crude expressions, and an unflattering taste for deep-fried kebabs, Ryan was also in the top-tier percentile of the class. He aced every assignment without trying, had won numerous awards, and was completing his degree on a unique scholarship he’d received in high school. He seemed to have it all: genius-like intelligence, handsome looks, inhuman metabolism, and a chain of gorgeous women who were always willing to have some casual fun.

I was a little different. I couldn’t handle that sort of lifestyle. While my educational level was on par with Ryan’s, I needed some sort of routine, a little bit of predictability, and a subtle amount of conformity. I favoured being average and I hated to think how I would keep up with countless women each month like Ryan seemed to do.

And you would rarely see me eating anything deep-fried.

I guess, despite its seemingly notable limitations, I actually thrived in the status quo. I didn’t know what I would do if I was faced with anything other.

‘So did Samantha and Rick get to the lake alright yesterday?’ I asked.
Ryan scoffed. ‘I reckon they thought they were already there before we even drove off from your place.’
I frowned. ‘How do you mean?’
Ryan smiled. ‘As soon as we got into the car, they were all over each other. Didn’t come up for air for the entire time I was driving.’
I chuckled.
‘I was tempted to pull over and watch,’ Ryan added, raising his eyebrows.
‘Gross.’
He shrugged. ‘Still, I’m sure they’ve christened most of the rooms by now. Good for them I say. We’ll see how long it takes for them to get bored of each other... I’ve got fifty bucks saying they’ll be talking about coming home within three days.’
I chuckled. ‘Although I’d like to tag your bet so I could get some extra cash for the holidays,’ I replied, ‘I highly doubt boredom will be part of their anniversary.’
‘We’ll see...’ he said.
‘Why so pessimistic?’
‘Keeps things entertaining,’ he shrugged.
I frowned.
‘So you want to head off soon?’ he asked.

Our tutor still hadn’t arrived, I noted.

'Dude, I just got here,’ I replied.
‘We’re giving her another five minutes before we leave,’ he said.

I nodded. Most classes had an unwritten condition that if the lecturer or tutor hadn’t turned up to teach within fifteen minutes of their scheduled lesson, we, the students, could leave without penalty. In most cases, lecturers and tutors alike felt the condition was suitable, as it didn’t require them to give notice to anyone if they weren’t going to make it. Most of us students didn’t mind either… it saved us any extra effort of learning and, quite often, hours of homework.

The door suddenly swung open and a young woman – not much older than the rest of us – rushed into the room. I heard a couple of the students groan as they stopped monitoring their watches.

‘Hi everyone,’ she said breathlessly, ‘sorry I’m late.’

To be continued....

New Artwork

I did me a little design work the other day, trying to come up with a book cover of sorts. This is one such attempt which I don't mind. Still not happy with it myself personally, but it's here for you to check out.

I'm actually thinking I want to go a little more simpler, a little more gritty. Not sure. Something that is like black/white, maybe a splash of blue somewhere little in there somewhere. Maybe each book can have a variation of each other, blue, red, green colour highlights to distinguish book 1, 2, 3, etc. Contemplating the ideas.

2009 - The Final Stretch

It's New Years Day for 2009.

It's been a while since posting anything here so I'm going to recap some things.

The book is coming along nicely. Almost done proof-reading and almost ready to start writing Book 3, with Book 1 to follow after that. I have semi interested publishers (nothing official, two people just want me to refine what I have and send them some samples whenever I get around to it. They seem interested, but not interested, so I'm not sure if they were just being nice or whether they're genuine. Can't afford to get hopes up too soon, so will see how it goes once I'm happy with some samples).

A few things have been updated and tweaked in Book 2, hopefully for the better. Plot holes have been filled, extra tidbits of information have been sprinkled through that link to other components in Book 1 and Book 3. The "mastermind" side of things has been given a code name, and overall the book is getting nicely trimmed and plumped at the same time. A lot of science is being confirmed and some new theories have been incorporated based on new discoveries in real world quantum physics. The start-up of the collider in Europe has also spurred some further details, which some of the characters utilise.

Katie's role is becoming a little larger, as is Ryan's - who is to be part of Book 3 in a much larger capacity than he is in Book 2. The relationship between Joseph and Ryan is interesting for me. They bounce off each other quite well, yet they have moments when their personalities clash and cause friction. Katie will become a lot stronger and she will have a slightly larger focus in act 3 than what I had previously. I found in my original draft she seemed to disappear for a bit as Joseph went on his own journey, so I've incorporated her into the storyline some more as a subplot which slightly links into the much larger scheme of things.

One of the biggest changes I've made is to character names. I decided to rename characters using name's that provide personality meanings to them.

GASA for example, has been renamed to TerraSpace Corporation. GASA seemed too juvenile/cliched and was just a plain rip-off of NASA. TerraSpace Corporation is also the world's primary transportation company. They look after not only space flight, but normal flight, public transport and a whole bunch of other stuff. They're very much everywhere, hence why it is a lot more dramatic with things that happen with the company later in Book 3... stay tuned.

Renee Sandford has been renamed to Paige Jaeger.

Dmitri Tirklov has been renamed to Aleksandr Lyov.

These new names have meanings behind them. The meanings are for my purposes only. They won't be elaborated on in the book at all - at least, not directly, so for that reason I'm not going to say the meanings here either. If you want to look them up, go ahead. :-)

Book 3's notes and timeline has also been getting a look at and it's becoming much more tighter as time goes on. Book 3 explains some of the origins of certain characters, as well as providing nice tie-ups of loose ends that get looked at all the way from during Book 1.

Spec wise, book 2 is currently 539 pages. 276,291 words.

Apart from that, I'm still plodding away. I say it every post lately, but it's the unfortunate truth. I just don't have time to spend on it every day/week, despite sometimes having cravings just to sit down with the laptop and read it for hours.
I honestly really enjoy reading it back to myself. Never before have I been so interested in a book I've written so I'm very pleased with this one, and hope it and I will continue to progress toward some sort of resolution.

Anyways... I'll be off. Until next time.

Spin-Off

Oh crap, I hear some people say...

Spin-offs are usually the nails in coffins to some things. Mine, however, may be slightly different.

While writing the Beneath A Broken Sky trilogy, I come up with a bunch of ideas that are good on their own, but can't fit into the existing books, or be spawned off into new novels on their own. As such, I am preparing to develop a spin-off novel which is a collection of short stories based on the universe discribed in Beneath A Broken Sky. However, saying that, these stories may not necessarily be in the "same" universe, but rather an alternate one. There may be similaries, character cameos, situations which shed another light onto what's been described in the trilogy, and so on and so forth.

As I progress with ideas and development, I will update you on what's going on.
At first, all I have is the tentative name of this book, as well as some ideas of the stories contained within it.

So the title of this spin-off novel will keep the Beneath A Broken Sky headline title. It's specific title will be called "Dispersal". The use of an English word is on purpose. I don't want to use Latin words for this version, and the word "dispersal" itself is a perfect connotation to the themes within.

The title of one of the short stories will be called "Relative".
Another title will be called "Endurance".
There's also a tentative story called "Instinct" or something like that.

RELATIVE - Explores the situations of three scientists who believe the universe around them isn't quite right. One of the scientists is already in an institution, while a second is arrested on terrorism charges based on his blog writings. The third, meanwhile, has found some strange details about himself and is figuring out answers. There's cameos from Raymond Landow and Dmitri Tirklov - but not how you would expect - and there's a nice realisation along the way of how easy it could be for our world to change instantly or simply no longer exist without anyone realising.

ENDURANCE - The space-shuttle Endurance and the characters on board have an experience which is not described in great detail at the end of Book 1 because the continuation of the plot-point is not necessary. But this particular short story will go into that detail, and describe what happened to our characters after the anomaly was created near the Field and the way their lives went on.

INSTINCT - To be advised.

Current Count 4 + Bonus Update!

Okay... I'm buggered. lol.

Unfortunately, I'm still not quite finished the final proof read... and everytime I think I get close, something comes up or I have to change a lot of previously written stuff... damn plot holes.

Anyways, so I've been going through the book from top to bottom. I'm now completely finished the first two acts. They're done and dusted and sitting idly by waiting for the third act to get its act together (pardon the pun). So at the moment, I'm going through an important section where a bunch of stuff is realised by two of the main characters. This particular area is complicated and lots of little ends are tied together to become one stream of realisation. And in the next few paragraphs, all shit begins to break lose until the last page.

I'm currently getting some quotes for preliminary printing. A few copies will be distributed to specific people for analysis, etc.

The biggest thing - I believe, at the moment - is that there's going to be some name changes to the books. While the overall title will continue to be "Beneath A Broken Sky"... the subtitles Ante Finis, Ad Fundum, and Lux et Veritas... will be adjusted. Actually, probably just Ante Finis. Ad Fundum (To The End) will remain, as will Lux et Veritas (Light and Truth). I'm still figuring out what the title will be changed to, but at the moment, I'm just not getting the vibe from Ante Finis anymore.

So at the moment, as of August 8, 2007 Book 2 of the "Beneath A Broken Sky" trilogy has...

451 pages
226,286 words
1,064,234 characters (no spaces)
7,404 paragraphs
21,446 lines

*Deep sigh*... this is tougher than I ever thought it was going to be.
But still, I'm getting closer. If I don't have this finished by the end of the year, I'm going to be severely annoyed... I'm getting too excited about starting Book 3.

There's lots of cool stuff yet to come. Stay tuned...

Current Count 3

Been working hard on this latest proofing... lots of minor adjustments with grammar and wording choices/phrasing. Only a few little scene extensions have been made, but I'm only half-way through and the biggest and most exciting scenes are still yet to come!

I'm using my notes and making adjustments accordingly so that no plot hole is left uncovered. Either I fix it later in the book, or I make sure to cover the topic in another book. Either way, everything should be neatly tied up once all three books are finished. Man, I can't wait to get into write them. Book 2 has taken years to get to this point. I hope I can be a little quicker on the next ones. I want them to be finished and completed finally. I'd love to sit down and read each book from start to finish without figuring out changes, lol. Better yet, I want everyone ELSE to be able to sit down and read them from start to finish.

Anyways, so here's the current update on my progress.

372 pages
185,699 words
871,298 characters (no spaces)
6,252 paragraphs
17,664 lines

Wow... a fair bit of difference to the last count. lol. And still more to come!

So okay then, read me later!

Current Count 2

Another short post, just to let you all know where I am in the scheme of things:

307 Pages
152,488 words
714,081 characters (no spaces)
5,194 paragraphs
14,571 lines

It's certainly getting there. I'm very impressed, considering my first complete draft was only 185 pages. lol... makes me laugh. The second draft is almost finished now. Proofing, correcting, adding new material in is just about done. I forsee only approximately another fifty pages or so before it's all done and dusted. After that... onto draft 3!!!

Interesting Incidents

Hello all.

I'm currently 50% through proof reading Book 2 of the trilogy, and it's shaping up rather well actually. A few niggly little things to do with plot and continuity, but I'm fixing them as I go, so it's working better than it was before... it's more fluid now, and the pace works a lot better.

A few changes I've made include Katie's introduction. At first, her introduction was fairly short (about 1 page). It was very straight down the line, with very little fluff. I went through and expanded the scene, adding more descriptive dialogue and some more interaction between her and her boss. I have named the company she works for (and renamed her boss to fit), and explained a tiny bit more of her history - but not too much, as her background is discovered by Joseph later in the story. I have also reworked the background science, and written in new scenes with Joseph and Ryan to establish the science for the reader. A scene where Joseph first meets Dmitri Tirklov has been reworked to include a few more interesting apprehensive bits, as well as the inclusion of the previously mentioned reworked science.

I have been continuously researching information regarding black holes since new information has come to light from overseas where a new particle collider is being built - scheduled to open within the next 2 years. I have found some preliminary research involving that collider and used the basic theories within my story. This way, the story is not only a work of fiction, but it contains elements of non-fictional groundbreaking physics.

I'm hoping to have my first proof-reading stage completed within 3 weeks, in time for my wedding to my beautiful fiance. We'll be getting married on October 5th, 2006 and I have a few friends who would be willing to have a read of an almost finished product. I think another few proof-reading stages would be in order, and I would greatly appreciate any feedback to the book. I need other points of view and error finding that I may have missed. I need to figure out ease of readability, continuity errors, spelling/grammer mistakes, and anything else that detracts from the story.

But anyways, until next time, I shall be off. Look forward to writing again soon.

Current Count

This is just a short and sweet post, letting you know my current position with Beneath A Broken Sky: Ad Fundum.

I'm currently in the proofing stage - as you may be aware - of book 2. I have just done a major sweep with spelling and grammer checking, and have done a quick word count. As of September 5th, 2006, there are currently:

212 Pages
104,034 words
483,652 characters (no spaces)
3,387 paragraphs
10,024 lines

Back to it then, shall we? Until next time...

Sensational Snippet

Hi all, once again, from the desk of me...

It's been relatively busy for me lately, which is why I haven't posted anything for a week or so. But never fear, here is an update on what's happening.

I've been snowed under with work lately that I haven't had a chance to spend any free time working on my book. It's a painstaking process at the moment, as I'm currently committed to the task of cleaning up loose ends and making sure everything flows. Since the majority of the story has been written, it's now, more or less, time to finalise everything and lock things down.

I find this part of the writing process the most arduous, as it relies on a lot more thinking than the process of just writing initially. I have to make sure I don't contradict myself, and I also have to make sure the flow is right, not too jumpy, and not confusing. Although I know my editor will eventually sit down and practically rip the book to shreds, I'm hoping I can save her the task prior to her seeing it, so that the book may survive a little longer in its current form.

So, because I have checked, double-checked and re-checked my double checking, I am now pleased to offer you the opening few paragraphs from Book 2: Ad Fundum.

The opening basically starts near the end of the book, but does not provide the actual ending, nor the entire part of the climax. The point of the opening is to give the reader an exciting glimpse into the story and hopefully motivate them enough to read on. Readers will hopefully want to know what's happened, they want to know who the characters are and how they got into the prediciment.

So here it is... the opening of Beneath a Broken Sky: Ad Fundum:

The air was still. Everyone at the edge of the river stared silently into the sky above the city, awaiting the inevitable and unescapable event that was – just a few days ago – never even dreamt of. Parents continued to play solemnly with their children in an effort to hide their growing fear. Couples held each other tightly. Individual people grouped together with strangers; some holding hands, others embracing; all in a desperate attempt to feel someone close to them until the final moment.
The sky flashed like lightning, but everyone knew it was something much more sinister; something much more than life itself. And yet, no one knew exactly what it was. No one knew how it had started.
Except me.
There had been an immediate analysis within the first hours of the anomaly’s discovery; an analysis that eventually drew to the conclusion that the event was unstoppable. All that was left now was raw humanity.
Community. Love. Hope.
‘How much longer?’ Katie asked me.
‘I don’t know,’ I replied, my throat clenching.
There was more silence. ‘Will it hurt?’ she asked after a moment, her voice soft.
I turned and looked at her tearfully. She was so gorgeous. Her beautiful eyes glistened, reflecting the abnormal light washing over us from the sky above.
I knew the answer to her question, but I didn’t want to admit it to her. Instead, I shrugged and replied, ‘I don’t know.’
She nodded and looked back up at the night sky. The now-familiar orbs – once millions of miles away – glowed back at us as brightly as the Moon they now dwarfed. ‘Hold me,’ she said softly.

I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her close. Her warmth felt comforting. I rested my head against hers and closed my eyes. For a moment, the world disappeared and I saw myself in a different place; a place from my childhood perhaps, where life was once happy and carefree.
There was a dull screeching sound, like car tyres on bitumen blocks away. Slowly, the screeching rose in volume. I opened my eyes as the light suddenly began to descend. Katie’s arms tightened around me as the sky quickly paled.
‘Don’t be scared,’ I told her, ‘Don’t be scared.’
‘I love you,’ she said to me.
I looked at her and smiled. ‘I love you,’ I replied.
The screeching suddenly exploded all around us. The light approached.
It was only a matter of seconds.

‘Don’t let go,’ I said.

Well there you have it. I hope it sparks some interest in you to read more. I might add a few more snippets as I go along. But anyways, until next time!

Enticing Extras

Hello again!

Today, I'm showing you other projects that I'm currently working on. In light of me posting the cover samples for the 'Beneath A Broken Sky' trilogy, I've decided to show you other cover samples/teasers for other books I'm currently in the process of producing.

These other stories are currently in various stages of production, some more advanced than others. Beneath each teaser image I will rundown the basic idea I have for each story. Most of the ideas are still rough and need embellishment and further brainstorming. A couple of them are ready to start producing, and are scheduled to commence once the 'Beneath A Broken Sky' trilogy has been completed.

I must warn, however, there are two images which may disturb young viewers, so discretion is advised. I myself don't think they're too bad, but they are based on horror and violence. Click on the images for a larger view.

One Day:
Four people. Four lives. One ending.
Four people with no connection to each other live out their daily lives in their own world.
A street-smart detective invistigates the murder of the mayor's daughter. An unmotivated single-father lawyer fights a case he knows he can't win. A sales assistant from a big-brand department store goes about her seemingly monotonous life. A terrorist prepares for his attack on the city. Four lives are told seperately in four parts. Every character has small interactions with every other one, but none of them realise that each of their lives leads to one outcome.

One Night:
Four people. Four lives. One ending.
Following on from One Day, is One Night, the second and final part of the race to stop a terrorist from destroying the city. Four people, each of whom are on their way to the city's biggest rave party, find themselves thrown into chaos as the terrorist group unleashes their plan.
Each character must face their own fears and band together in order to end the reign of terror before it escalates any further.

Prime Target:
A comedic adventure in the style of "The Craic", "The Castle", and "Crackerjack".
As the world's most wanted cyber-criminal plots to crack every secruity algorythm used by high-security corporations. The American cyber task force has men all over the world trying to track the criminal, with no use. On the other side of the world, with no idea on current events, high school student, Luke, decides to play a practical joke. Creating a blog under the psyeudonym name of Kelu (which happens to be the same surname of the cyber-criminal), he reveals to the internet world he has discovered the formula to obtaining every prime number. Word of the formula revelation reaches America. Seeing the name, they believe that it is the terrorist teasing them. Two of the currently available (not necessarily the best) officers are sent to Australia to find "Kelu" and apprehend him. Luke quickly discovers his prank has gotten out of control. He and his friends try and figure out what to do and are confronted by a mad man who wants to save (kidnap) them from the government. Hilarity ensues as the bungling American task-force officers arrive and Luke is forced into a frantic cat-and-mouse chase.

The Terrible Tales of Terrance Turnpopple:
Terrance is a 12 year old boy who often finds himself in peculiar situations. This particular situation, however, turns out more menacing than he thought. A devious plot is taking place in the small town of Bingswood. Mysterious people arrive while others go missing. Strange sounds come from abandoned houses, dead animals appear in Stimey Creek, and other peculiar events unfold. The clues lead Terrance, his best friend Zack, cousin Codi, and annoying neighbour Cynthia, on the road to uncover a truth. Told over a series of small books, The Terrible Tales of Terrance Turnpopple is aimed at pre/mid-teen kids with a taste for adventure, suspense, mystery and heroics.

Red List:
A murder is amongst them, and none of them know it until its too late. Based on actual events, Red List tells the story of a man who befriended, stalked, hunted, then brutally killed almost fifteen people in a week. Using seemingly innocent situations, such as carpooling, school committees, church functions and sporting events, the killer finds his victims and adds their name to his list - a small red leather bound notebook. When he writes their name, he immediately writes their method of death and begins the process of making his ideas reality.
A gripping suspense told from the perspective of the two police officers investigating him, as well as the killer himself.

Afraid of the Dark:
It is dusk. A father is killed on the street while walking with his young son home from work. His 3 year old son runs home. In the darkness of night, the killer breaks in and the boy is brutally murdered. The body is buried, but the killer also dies and the house is left.
Almost 60 years later, univerisity student Kyle is walking home one night. He sees the derelict house... a house no one has lived in since he could remember. As he passes, he sees the face of a boy looking out through the window from inside. The boy has no eyes. Kyle blinks and the vision is gone. Curious, he investigates further. One day he breaks in and looks around. The house is empty and there is nothing out of the ordinary. Later that night, he walks by again. The boy with no eyes stares through the window. Kyle watches, not looking away. The boy screams and vanishes. Kyle informs classmates of the haunted house and a mission is set up to film the hauntings. They set up a camera during the day and stream video footage onto a laptop. The camera records only during the day. Anything from dusk till dawn is non-existant. A group of students - including Kyle - go and stay the night. During the day, everything is fine. As night decends, members of the group are killed one by one. As the group disappears around him, Kyle must fight for his life and survive the night.

Acute Artwork

Hello once again! In today's post, I'm revealing small teaser-ish cover design samples for the 'Beneath A Broken Sky' trilogy. The samples displayed in this post are pretty much the final style I'm going for. The font is definately the final version, as I've been slaving away using Illustrator and Photoshop, designing my own variation of the existing "Arial Black" font style, so I'm not changing it any more.

I wanted the backgrounds for each book to be the same as each other. There is no variation, other than the sub-titles. I have had an idea that the covers could use different colour hues. The first book, "Ante Finis", would be blue. The second book, "Ad Fundum", would be red. The third book, "Lux et Veritas", would be orange/yellow. But for the time being, all covers are silver/grey, as that is actually what looks best out of all the colour options.

So here's the cover design samples for your viewing pleasure. Until next time...

Book 1: Anti Finis

Book 2: Ad Fundum

Beneficial Blurbs

Hi again,

Today's post is to delve into the plots of each book. The small paragraphs - call them blurbs, if you will - are to provide you with outlines for each book... hopefully without giving too much away. Fingers crossed...

Beneath A Broken Sky: Ante Finis
The Global Aeronautical and Space Agency (GASA) is preparing its first routine expansion of The Field: a technologically-advanced energy generator situated on the edge of our solar system. We follow the events leading up to the mission, focusing on the shuttle crew and a mysterious technician who may be leading a double life. After a plan is revealed to sabotage the expansion mission, the lives of everyone involved will climax into an unforeseen tragedy that will spark an unstoppable event that consequently changes the world forever.

Beneath A Broken Sky: Ad Fundum
Joseph Bentley is a university student caught up in events triggered from a catastrophic sabotage attempt on The Field. Working with an eccentric professor, who has discovered a bizarre anomaly caused by the Field's malfunction, Joseph must convince the Minister for Science of the impending annihilation of man-kind. During his quest, he discovers that the anomaly was actually man-made and planned. As his world comes crashing down around him, Joseph must unravel the mystery of who is responsible before the end of the world overwhelms them all.

Beneath A Broken Sky: Lux et Veritas
A year after the catastrophic event, the world has been thrown into chaos. Billions of people lost their lives and the survivors must now contend with a new cancerous epidemic that is sweeping the worlds. In a tragic twist of fate, Katie is diagnosed with the cancer and is given only a matter of days before she becomes another victim. With only a short amount of time, Joseph promises he will find a cure and save her. Starting with Professor Landow's research, Joseph begins tracking down a mysterious woman who had developed a variation of the cure he needs.
To make his job easier, Joseph teams up with his good friend, Ryan - now a forensic scientist - in his search. Together they unveil the truth about the cure, the pre-planned anomaly, and a secret that had spanned almost three generations. With their lives constantly on the line, Joseph and Ryan face many obstacles in their attempt to save not only Joseph's love, but also the remaining survivors of man-kind.

Dramatic Dreams

I guess I should tell you how it all came about. I appologise for the non-linear structure of these posts, but hey... I'm writing as things come to mind.

The idea came to me from a dream I had. I live in Brisbane, Australia, and my perspective in the dream was as if I were standing on the boardwalk of Southbank (a cultural area of small parks, cafes, etc.) looking east towards the cityscape. In the sky above the buildings, I could see planets. Not just one or two ... but approximately twenty-six. Some were familiar, others were vaguely generic in appearance. Some could not be mistaken, such as Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, etc. But the thing that was different about the vision was that there were eight planets of Jupiter, five of Mars, six or so of Saturn, etc. I could see planets crashing into each other, sending enormous shockwaves through space. I woke just as massive fragments of the planets began to descend towards the city in a terrifying shower of burning hot rock and fire.

This dream took place approximately three and a half years ago... even before I met my current fiance. The dream was etched in my mind. It had been so vivid and life-like that I couldn't escape from its images. I decided to turn it into a book.

At first, the idea seemed stupid. Obviously, it was completely unbelievable, but I vowed to myself that I would try and push it into a realm of some sort of believability. I researched physics, quantum theories, and many other aspects which could shift the idea at least into a realm of more plausible proportions. Eventually, enough research had been made that I could at least explain some of the theories behind the anomaly, while also leaving an overall vagueness to it that the majority of people could just "go with it" without being bogged down into techno-jargon. It's not meant to be super real and it's by no means etched in fact. It's a fantasy, with as much realism as I can throw at it to make it sound just that little bit plausible.

From that point, I needed to establish characters, motives, twists, and events. I did this and developed a framework to my story. The skeletal structure allowed me a basis to work on, which I could flesh out and expand upon.

At first, the original story, simply titled "Beneath A Broken Sky", was a one and only. It focused only on Joseph and his journey. However as time went on, I began developing further plot points. He found a love interest, and experienced a whole new range of events. From these new plot points, I discovered I could elaborate and create a second story. Based a year after the first one, the sequal expanded upon the repurcussions of the original story, but provided an interesting twist. Then, due to the twist, I discovered I could create a prequel, which would show how it all began.

So from one dream came a story, then a sequal, then a prequel. I found ways to link everything together in an interesting and fluid way and, funnily enough, the books will be written in that order (2, 3, 1).

So there you have it. In further posts, I will continue to update you on things, as well as post basic outlines of each book's plot. Hopefully I won't give anything away.

Until next time, don't forget to take out the trash.

Charismatic Characters

Hi again... from the desk of me...

This post is dedicated to the reveal of specific characters used throughout the "Beneath A Broken Sky" trilogy. There may be revisions on this post sometime in the future, as I haven't quite fleshed out some characters - specifically from "Book 1: Ante Finis". This is because my original conception began with "Book 2: Ad Fundum", as described in another post "Dramatic Dreams".

The photos included in this post have been sourced from generic web image searches through Google. They are simply generic people who, I feel, closest resemble the type of characters I'm writing. Since I've found these pictures, I have used them to provide me with inspiration in writing their characters. My descriptions of characters have maintained effective continuity throughout the trilogy while also providing me motivation for their actions.

The photos have been sourced not only just for their visual likeness to the characters I am describing, but also because of their expressions and poses. So, without further procrastination, here's the list of major characters and their visual likenesses:
Joseph Bentley (Book 2, 3)
University student. Studies advanced physics and theoretical science before he is caught up in events that could change his life. Book 2 and 3 follows his life and his experiences from first-person perspective.
Katie McAlister (Book 2, 3)
Advertising Executive. Smart, sporty, sexy, funny. Joseph's perfect love interest.
Professor Raymond Landow (Book 1, 2, 3)
University Professor. Having professional connections with GASA officials, Landow is able to discover a major anomaly forming at the edge of the solar system. Blaming a sabotage attempt on the Field, Landow - with the help of Joseph Bentley - must try and shut down the Field to stop the anomaly from growing and creating a cataclysmic event.
Alex McAlister (Book 1, 2, 3)
Minister for Science. McAlister is an old-fashioned man with old-fashioned values. His world of science focuses primarily on hard-evidence work. When Landow and Joseph approach him citing theoretical anomalies, McAlister proves to be a difficult hurdle to overcome. Joseph not only contends with him on a professional level, but also privately, as McAlister is also Katie's arrogant and demanding father.
Renee Sallenger (Book 1, 2, 3)
Technician/Assassin. Primarily a GASA technician involved with the Field Expansion crew, Renee is part of the sabotage attempt on the Field. When Joseph begins to figure out the truth behind the sabotage, she is sent to silence him, no matter what the cost is.
Dmitri Tirklov (Book 1, 2, 3)
Proffesional scientist. A long-time friend of Landow, Tirklov is a brilliant Russian scientist working with revolutionary vision. He is also idolised by Joseph.
Ryan Larson (Book 2, 3)
University student. Best friend to Joseph and an obviously successful ladies man. Ryan is a brilliant scienctist who doesn't follow stereotypical science typecasts. His major ambition - after getting with sexy ladies - is to get into forensic science.
Marcus (Book 1, 2, 3)
Secret Soldier. Responsible for overseeing special tactical militaristic operations. Also an associate to Renee and active participant in following the same motives.
Edward Thompson (Book 1, 2)
Mechanical shuttle technician. While working alongside Renee, Edward discovers her true motives and suddenly finds himself in a life-or-death situation. Narrowly escaping from Renee's vengence, he vows to find out what she is planning and expose her.
William Platski (Book 1, 2, 3)
GASA Official. Responsible for overseeing procedure for the Field Expansion mission, and close collegue to Landow while working at GASA.
Jonathan Davis (Book 1, 2, 3)
Jonathan is a GASA technician, also working alongside Renee and Edward. After Edward's life is compromised, he secretly hides his knowledge of anything in the hope that he can save Edward.
So there you have it. These are the major characters so far. As I said above, this post may be revised as more details come into play in terms of character's visual identities.

NOTE: Characters portrayed in this post are fictional. Any connection to existing names, etc, is purely coincidental. Images are for example only. The people shown do not have any connection with me or the book, or its characters, in any way.

Until next time, make sure you brush your teeth.

Titilating Titles

I have recently finalised the names of each of the three books in the "Beneath A Broken Sky" trilogy. I have taken the approach to use unique, uncommon phrases that hopefully will add a sense of interest in the books. Oh, and they're also in another language.

I'm uncertain as to whether these names will stay, but so far they have existed quite solidly both on paper and in my imagination. The title of the second book in the trilogy has been in my head for a good number of years since I heard it while at university. Until now, I've never had a chance to use it, so I'm glad that it can finally be printed on a page and represent a solid aspect of my creativity.

The book titles aren't something pulled out of thin air. It's not like the name of that sequal movie involving high levels of speed and a cruise that gets out of control. You know the one I'm talking about... the preceeding movie to that sequal was about a bus or some mode of public transportation. There was an explosive device on board... you remember the one? Yeah.
Anyways, so the titles sufficiently represent something of each book. Each phrase is also utilised in each of the books by either a character or an event, location, building... anything. I'm not going to give away where the names are used... you'll just have to wait and read them for yourself. In any case, the titles will have strong reference to the plot of each individual book.

"Beneath A Broken Sky" is one story. There are three acts of the story's progression, with each act represented across three individual books. Below are the book titles of each of the three books:

Book 1:
Beneath A Broken Sky: Ante Finis

Book 2:
Beneath A Broken Sky: Ad Fundum

Book 3:
Beneath A Broken Sky: Lux et Veritas

As you can tell, the three sub-titles for each book are in Latin. If you can't tell, well.... they're in Latin. I chose Latin because it is one of the world's greatest languages. There are many other great languages, including the Chinese and Japanese dialects; the native tongue of American Indians; and also Aramaic. However, being an anglo-saxon who's primary language is English, I chose the language most common to me; the language which provided a solid base for the words I use today. I find Latin extremely interesting in an anthropological way. Although Latin is used very rarely in the books (probably restricted to the titles, lol), I liked the obscurity of it's presence in describing each of the three acts.

Admittedly, the translation of each sub-title is fairly straight forward and explains the story fairly simply. However, I'd rather not focus on the English variation of each sub-title, as - to be honest - they're a little boring. I'd rather incite curiosity and interest by having the reader decipher the phrases for themselves.

However... being a person who likes spoilers, I will let you readers know - exclusively - what the translations are... but be warned, they're not as exiting as you may think.

(Click and drag your mouse to highlight between these marks: * *

* Ante Finis = "Before the End" *

* Ad Fundum = "To The End" *

* Lux et Veritas = "Light and Truth" *

As you can see - or can't, as it may be - each of the titles gives you an idea on how the arcs progress. I hope all of you who read the secret text feel special now.

In the upcoming posts, I will outline the major characters for each book... I will also publish basic information regarding the book plots... so stay tuned.

Plot Point Ponderings

Developing plausible links and reasons to scenarios for characters is proving interesting. While the major plot points have already been established across the entire trilogy, the tricky part is now linking these points together in a way which is logical and believable. The story loses credibility as a "realistic" event if the reader is unable to believe the characters and the decisions they make to get from one point to another. I must keep this in mind as I write.

Often, whenever I have a character performing an action or making a choice, I first think to myself, "what would I do in that situation". Mind you, what I would want to do, and would do are sometimes completely different in reality. In those instances I must think, not only what I would do, but what would I do if I were a particular character?

Another troublesome aspect of the linking process between plot points is to make sure no holes develop along the way. Plot holes annoy the crap out of me, and I'd hate it if an incredibly obvious plot hole were discovered in any of my books. The main trouble of plot holes occurs when certain events that can compliment, contradict or completely negate other events occur over a space of "story time". In my books in particular, sometimes plot points are introduced very early on in the piece and then fade away for the remainder of the story's timeframe, only to come back later. For example, one plot point comes into action at the very beginning of Book 1, never to be spoken about again until the very end of Book 3. A few hidden tid-bits of reminders may be included throughout the text of the three books as a whole, but nothing significant.

I have also discovered that it is imperative not to add a new piece of information which negates or contradicts something that has previously happened - or will happen in the future - without the new information being pre-planned and scutinized carefully. Every time a new plot point is developed, I ask questions like: 'What are the repercussions of a certain act?' 'What other choices could a character make once the new event has been completed?' And, if adding a new event between two already-existing events, 'what choices must a character make to get from "Pre-Existing Event A" to "New Event" and back to "Pre-Existing Event B"?

I have documented many (if not all) of the characters actions in easy-to-understand timelines, which inturn assist me with knowing what each person did/thought/said, when they did it, where they were, and how they resolved the action. It is tough at times because one action has several plausible repercussions, with each repercussion having several more plausible choices resulting from it. Although the documentation has proven to be extremely beneficial, it's proving to be a very interesting task keeping track of everything and maintaining a believable progression for each of the characters.

I shall continue on, however, fighting the battles of writer's block, tricky character navigation and plausible plot ploints. Until next time...

Quintesential Quote

"Even with mankind's ability to create light, we still fumble in the dark without someone there to guide us." - Professor Raymond Landow, 'Beneath A Broken Sky: Ad Fundum'
